Food should not be an impossible choice. This September is dedicated to raising awareness and taking action to end hunger. Hunger Action Month was established by Feeding America in 2008 when they decided that it's time we all got up and took action to help our neighbors in need.

Hunger is a problem that exists in various countries all over the world, including the United States. According to Feeding America, 1 in 8 people (42 million) in the U.S. experience food insecurity. Here are a few ways you can take action to end hunger in the United States.

3 ways you can take action and help our neighbors in need

1. Educate yourself and others on the facts of hunger

In America, hunger can be hard to detect sometimes which is why some people think that it’s not an issue. Food insecurity is a problem that occurs in every county in the U.S. Even though you can't always see it, it still exists. By knowing the facts and statistics you can help raise awareness about hunger. Read and share these Five Myths about hunger in order to inspire your friends and family to take action.

2. Donate at Community Missions or your local food bank

Consider donating at Community Missions or other food banks in your community. Your donation can help hunger relief programs across the country with resources to help feed the hungry. Last year, Community Missions provided 174,497 meals to people in need. In honor of Hunger Action Month, consider making a one-time or monthly donation at your local food bank. Your support help organizations bring more food to more people every single day.

3. Become a regular volunteer at food banks and pantries

Most food banks and pantries in your community rely on support from volunteers. Spending a few hours volunteering each week or month can make a huge difference for food banks and the people that they serve. Volunteering gives you the opportunity to impact and connect with your local community, while also increasing your self-esteem and well-being. This makes it beneficial for your own health.

This month serves as a reminder that there are people in the world that are in need of our helping hand. With every action, we can get one step closer to ending hunger in the United States.
